Survival Island – Devblog 2

For this devblog i plan to add a day/night cycle and add some player variables like health, warmth, cold and energy. So after a full day it is recommended for the player to sleep to refill energy. not sleeping will cause negative effects.

Day/Night cycle

The day night cycle is configured so days can be counted. Every time it turns day it runs a function initiating a new day. This is useful for the farming mechanics coming later to the game allowing the crops to grow a stage based on days. this is also useful for crops when the player sleeps to skip a night. crops will then still register a new day.

Resources

Resources now drop from both rocks and trees. Currently it is set up in a really simple way, but the current mechanic can be expanded on whenever the time comes. Currently there are no animations when destroying things, but particle effects will be added later on.

Change of plans

I’ve decided to give the player a inventory. This is because it makes crafting less complicated. The inventory will be very limited until the player can aquire a backpack. So my plan is for the player to only have the hotbar as a possible inventory, maybe a few more slots, i’ll see what i end up with. So i’ll work on a inventory next, aswell as some other stuff.

Added:

  • Added a stone resource (aquired by destroying rocks)
  • Added a wood resource (aquired by destroying trees)
  • Added a day/night cycle
  • Added a campfire that emmits light at night
  • Added cooked rabbit meat (aquired by placing meat on campfire)
  • Added player health

Changed:

  • Tree tops now go transparent when the player walks behind them

Next up i plan to add a inventory and a crafting system. First item the player can craft will be the campfire. other things might be added aswell.
