Survival Island – Devblog 1

Survival island is a game i created a while ago, but never finished. I’ve decided to recreate the game. I love suvival games where you can make buildings, craft stuff and make your own special place. So my vision will focus on making it possible for the player to do what they wish for with what they are given.

The Plan

The plan is huge, but simple. The players should wake up on the shore of a island. There will be a huge main island surrounded by smaller islands. The smaller islands can be accessed by the player later on in the game with thigs the player can aquire. There will be a lot of different animals and bugs on the island. Some give positive effects, and some might give some negative. There will also be mechanics to allow the player to dig down into the ground and go to a underground cave system. But this might not be part of the first testing phase. The game will have its own little eco system. meaning the player will have to plant trees in order to grow trees. they wont spawn random. There will be a set of plants and trees already when spawned. but they will be gone when chopped down. How plants and trees will be planted is not in the plan yet, but i will come up with something. The player will have no inventory, but can craft a backpack to carry some items. Too many items in the backpack will have negative effects on the player. Crafting will work in a simple way. Put items/resources ontop of eachother in order to craft other items. Example: 3 rocks and 2 wood might give a campfire. put it ontop of eachother and dobbleclick it to craft. The player will spawn with a camper manual or something that will contain recipies for things to craft. Farming will also be made possible in the game. The player will be able to create a area and grow crops etc, wich can be used in different ingredients. Weather will also play a part in the game. alot of rain will water crops automaticly. But if it doesnt rain for a while, the player will have to water the crops themselves. Thunder will also be implemented at some point. But its not the focus for the first period. Thunder will be able to set fire to wooden materials with lightning. That includes building made of wood. Other materials will be avaliable for buildings too. So you can build fireproof building too. Further into the game there might be implemented other systems to make it possible for automatic farms etc. but not sure if that is something i want to add yet. So far only the main island and player movement is implemented. but i plan on adding more in the following week and hopefully have some content avaliable for testing soon.

Things to be added before test release:

  • Complete movement
  • Trees
  • Resources(wood, stone, coal etc)
  • 2 Animals
  • Player variables(health, warmth, cold, hunger)
  • Basic building(walls, floor, roof and door)
  • basic farming mechanics(watering, planting and harvesting)
  • crops(corn, wheat, seeds for trees)

Patch Notes – Devblog 1

Added:

  • Added a player with basic W,A,S,D movement
  • Added a rabbit with 4 animations (idle, move, sleep and die)
  • Added rabbit meat gained from killing a rabbit
  • Added a tree (can be cut down by the player)
  • Added a rock (can be destroyed to get stone)
  • Added basic Animal AI (will be changed in the future)
  • Added a demo island where i test new mechanics

Next up i plan to add resources like wood and stone, and allow the player to craft a campfire. I will also add a day/night cycle and emmit light from the campfire.
